Visitors from a Blocked Country Still Visit My Store

Introduction

If you notice that visitors from blocked countries are still appearing in your Shopify store's analytics, don't worry—this is a common occurrence. This guide explains why this happens and how you can verify that Blocky is working correctly.

Why Are Visitors from Blocked Countries Still Appearing?

Shopify counts all traffic, including visitors from blocked countries, as part of its analytics data. However, this does not mean that these visitors were able to access your store. The discrepancy occurs because:

  • Shopify tracks all attempted visits, even if access is blocked.
  • The app successfully blocks visitors in real time, but Shopify’s analytics does not differentiate between blocked and actual visitors.

This results in false positives, where Shopify registers visits that were actually prevented by the app.

Why Blocked Visitors May Appear in Abandoned Checkouts

Shopify may also record checkout attempts from blocked visitors as abandoned checkouts. This can happen even if Blocky prevented the visitor from completing (or sometimes even viewing) the checkout process.

This occurs because:

  • Shopify logs a checkout attempt as soon as the visitor reaches the checkout endpoint, even if Blocky intercepts them afterward.
  • Third-party apps — including Blocky — cannot stop Shopify from logging checkout attempts or abandoned checkouts.
  • These logs are fully controlled by Shopify and are not affected by country blocks, IP blocks, or any app-level restrictions.

This means you may occasionally see abandoned checkouts from visitors who were successfully blocked and never actually completed (or meaningfully started) a checkout.

How to Verify That Blocky Is Working Correctly

To ensure that Blocky is blocking visitors as expected, follow these steps:

  1. Enable the "Visitors Analytics" Feature
  • Click here and open the Blocky app dashboard in your Shopify admin.
  • Navigate to the Visitors Analytics section.
  • Check the logs to see a detailed list of blocked visitors.

  1. Test Blocking Manually
  • Try visiting your store from a blocked country using a VPN.
  • If the app is working, access should be denied, confirming the block.

Conclusion

Even if Shopify Analytics or Abandoned Checkout reports show activity from blocked visitors, Blocky is still preventing access as intended. These entries reflect Shopify's internal logging behavior—not a failure of the block.

To get a more accurate picture of your real store activity, use the Visitors Analytics feature inside the app.
